Pop culture, an expansion of popular mainstream trends, is a commonly referenced term when talking about fashion, artists and people or things with prominence in mainstream society. In today’s world, pop culture is typically spread through platforms online such as TikTok, Instagram or X. Since the year has finally wrapped up, all that’s left to do is reminisce about the iconic memes and moments of 2024, pop culture!
This year was prominent for groundbreaking new artists. In just one year, Sabrina Carpenter was able to transfer completely from a young Disney actress to a full, bombshell pop star. Her album “Short N’ Sweet” kicked off her public attention and scored her a Netflix Christmas special. Another artist who received recognition this year was Chapel Roan. Between her admirable costumes and bright makeup, she has gained an abundance of attention, for songs like “Casual” and “HOT TO GO,” and she received a couple Grammy nominations for her album “Midwest Princess.”
Many people love music, making it a sizeable talking point in mass media. A fan favorite SNL skit was the “Espresso” parody, featuring Ariana Grande. Another switch in the music industry was Beyonce’s country album “Cowboy Carter” The song, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” gained a mass of observation as it gained in popularity.
The social media platform, TikTok, harbor’s an immense amount of memes and referenceable content pertaining to pop culture. The Oxford word of the year “Brainrot” regained clout by appearing in the vocabulary of many users on the app. Recognition of the word has been caused by memes such as the TikTok Rizz Party, “mama a girl behind you,” and “What I Do?” Each of these phrases seem ridiculous out of context, but they all have a prominence that falls under the umbrella of brainrot.
Online games are another part of 2024’s pop culture. The Roblox game “Dress to Impress,” or “DTI,” is a dress up game with outfits and themes that have appealed to a large audience. With constant updates, and trendy pieces, the game has been a top played on Roblox all year! The game has accumulated over 4.7 billion visits and gained popularity in content with numerous streamers, TikTokers and YouTubers playing.
Overall, 2024 has been heavily centered around the online mass media when it comes to pop culture and has influenced the majority of trends, memes and content.
