Sora Video App, once a very popular generative artificial intelligence tool, recently announced their shutdown, due to OpenAI wanting to focus more on the creation of a “super app,” merging other commonly used generative AI platforms into one final destination. This led to Disney pulling out of their three-year and one billion dollar investment plan into OpenAI. Oddly enough, Disney sent Google, Meta, and Character.AI cease and desist letters in 2025 for character infringement: the exact same reason they entered a deal with OpenAI. Disney’s plan with Sora was to allow fans to generate videos of over 200 Disney characters, even adding a selective amount of these videos onto their streaming platform, Disney+. However, after OpenAI’s shutdown of Sora, this will no longer be a feature. Outside of this, Sora was utilized by users to create AI generated videos based on a prompt—much like other AI tools, but with a focus on videos. While this news may come as a disappointment to some, the overall impact is said to be a net positive for OpenAI, according to CyberNews, as the company was losing an estimated $15 million a day on Sora.
