According to the National Institute of Dental research around 90% of Americans have had a cavity at least once in their life and 23% of people have untreated teeth decay. Even more surprising is 180 million Americans have lost a tooth in their lives; that’s half of the country. But did you know that Japanese scientists might have a solution to most dental problems? Researchers at Kitona hospital and Kyoto university led by Dr. Katsu Takahashi is conducting trials on a medicine that can influence the USAG-1 protein that is the one responsible for adults not regrowing teeth. The medicine is expected to be ready in 2030 which could be huge in the medical world.

The scientists explain that humans normally lose their baby teeth first then if you lose your adult teeth, you need artificial teeth, but this new form of science and protein editing could interact with what they describe as “tooth buds” which they can edit and allow the body to regrow teeth.
