Many fans have been debating whether the movie adaption is any good compared to the known internet lore.

The backrooms originated in 2019 from a 4chan post referring to “liminal space” using a picture of endless empty yellow halls, with fluorescent light, and described to have moist carpet. The original picture has led to plethora of interpretations, the most popular being Kanes Pixels’ government experiment (Async Research Institute) theory also known as the “pure lore”. Along with the Wiki version of the backrooms, which introduces different rooms referred to as levels, entities with levels, and resources for wanderers trapped in the backrooms.

Kane Pixels (Kane Parson) blew up in 2022 for using 3D software to produce a short, found-footage video named “The Backrooms”. This video brought new people to the fandom of the backrooms and Kanes social media accounts, eventually leading him to become a director on the official Backrooms movie.

The movie referred more to Kane Pixels lore of the backrooms, involving a government company exploring and experimenting within the backrooms, the endless halls, entities, and even brings in a term known as “no-clipping”  which is where someone finds a spot in which you can travel to the other dimension called the backrooms.

Many fans have argued that the directors should have stuck to the original “pure lore”. Keeping the movie closer to a straight up psychological horror following the empty yellow rooms with bright lights. There would be no connecting levels or changes in scenery, no resources for those trapped, and no entities to hunt survivors. This lore touches more on the fear of permanent isolation and messing with people psychologically.

However, in response others have made the claim that keeping the pure lore wouldn’t be adaptable into a full movie as there wouldn’t be much to expand on. Because the directors chose to follow Kane Pixel’s lore, they were able to keep the story line going without it getting boring while still bringing in the horror and eerie aspects.
