The song incorporates themes such as passing down when you pass down as well as sacrificing for the things you love. Song lyrics such as “when you pass on what you gonna pass down” invoke a sense of selflessness and yearning to pass on your property. The story goes down the generations starting with a man in the 19th century who feeds his family with a “mule and a plow” and states that he is now a “whisper in a whisper in wind through the pine trees now” using symbolic imagery very effectively.
As the song goes on it cycles through each generation such as a Vietnam veteran who died and never met his son, then skips down more generations to the point in the story which the last family member is fresh out of college and considering selling the property that was in their family for generations but stops when he hears “a whisper in the wind that’s telling me”, “don’t”.
