A review of Megan Moroney’s Holiday EP, “Blue Christmas… Duh”

Megan Moroney has dropped her first ever holiday project, titled “Blue Christmas… Duh.” It is a three track EP including two original songs and one cover of the classic holiday tune “Blue Christmas”.

The first song featured on the EP is titled “All I Want for Christmas is a Cowboy” with an upbeat honky tonk energy that has a sort of line-dance vibe, this song will make you want to slide a pair of boots on and dance. The song is a single woman’s anthem of knowing exactly what you want for Christmas — in Moroney’s case, a cowboy. She sings, “Wrap a bow ‘round a boy in some Wrangler jeans / The only thing I’d like to see under my Christmas tree” to describe her Christmas wish. Her bubbly vocalization and sassy lyric delivery is a fun style as she sings the catchy line that she wants a cowboy “Who only wants [her].”

The upbeat country tune immediately flips into the slow-burning ache of the second track, “Christmas Morning.” The song  opens with mournful lyrics about losing trust and goodness in a relationship. Moroney uses the abrupt take-down of Christmas decorations and the “blink of an eye” that is Christmas morning as an analogy for her sadness expressing, “We’ve been fallin’ apart all year and today I can’t ignore it,” asking, “Baby, when did our love stop feelin’ like Christmas morning?” The song’s soft, steady beat allows for the message to connect with the listeners, making them reminisce about their childhood Christmas’ when the magic disappears, and the childlike innocence starts to fade.

The most famous adaptation of “Blue Christmas” was by Elvis Presley with his rock-and-roll flare. Moroney’s adaptation of “Blue Christmas” has the modern country twang that she is known for. Compared to the many renditions of this song, Moroney’s backing track differentiates from the rest. It has a slow acoustic guitar paired with mellow pedal steel fills in the instrumental that compliments her warm vocals. In this rendition, it’s as if Moroney’s reminiscing on a Christmas past, weaving her story-telling music style into the song.

This holiday EP has the honky-tonk flare along with raspy, warm vocals and heart-felt lyrics that give a sense of warmth and comfort for this Holiday season.
