The holiday season brings holiday drinks, and also holiday cups! But there was one cup in
particular which caused a stir up all around America. On October 6th, Starbucks first
announced their unexpectedly heavily sought after ‘Bearista’ cup, stating, “From cold
brew to an iced matcha latte, your drinks have never looked cuter. The Starbucks Bearista
glass cold cup brings instant joy to every sip.” The cup is in the shape of a bear, similar to
a honey jar, holding a Starbucks drink and wearing a green beanie with the Starbucks logo
on it. Starbucks lovers were instantly drawn to the cup’s cute nature.
Dozens of people lined up outside of their local Starbucks at the crack of dawn just for a
chance to get their hands on the Bearista cup. Many also called up Starbucks, with
Dunkirk receiving an astounding 89 calls just regarding the Bearista cup. But what
customers didn’t know was the limited availability of these cups. According to a barista at
Starbucks in Dunkirk, their location only received 2 Bearista cups for the initial drop. This
left customers in an outrage. Only the ones towards the front of the line stood a chance at
getting the Bearista cup, even those in the front still ensued chaos within the stores. Users
on Reddit who witnessed the chaos had to say, “They open the store and people literally
break other cups to get the bearista cup and it was kinda insane”
Property damaged, shattered cups, full on brawls – all for this limited edition Christmas
Bearista cup. Eventually, a statement was made, “The excitement for our merchandise
exceeded even our biggest expectations,” Starbucks told People Magazine in a Nov. 6
statement. “Despite shipping more Bearista cups to coffeehouses than almost any other
merchandise item this holiday season, the Bearista cup and some other items sold out
fast.” They continued, “We understand many customers were excited about the Bearista
cup and apologize for the disappointment this may have caused.”
Due to the high demand, the Bearista cups were restocked in stores for a short period of
time. The Dunkirk location received 6 cups in the second drop, which all sold out just as
fast as the first. It is unsure whether these cups will make a return again anytime soon, but
their chaos will be remembered.
