Since the start of this school year, many clubs here at NHS have begun to flourish. The clubs at NHS have all had members join and work together to finish projects and also just have fun. Even though the middle of the school year is upon us, new experiments have sprung. These clubs are excited to invite their new members in and figure out the swing of things.
To be more specific, the newest clubs are Spanish Club and Mock Trial. Mock Trial started December 9th in Mr. Barleys room (309). This club isn’t new to NHS, as it has been done in the past. It was very successful but many wished for more participants, but this year they have them. After the first meet on Monday the 9th, there were a total of 22 people that showed up and they were delighted to participate!
Mock Trial is a club that was brought up and is currently being led by Junior Julie Duarte. These Mock Trial meetings will occur every Monday, and so far they’ve had small debates to get them started. This year, the club will mainly work on small debates and practicing for the competitions they will compete in with other schools next year. The competitions are relatively similar to what they’re practicing right now, learning the ropes of debating and public speaking. They will not be competing this year because of the timing the club started but that means they are able to get prepared.
Duarte stated, “I am looking forward to the progression over this year and I do think there is high potential in the club. So I would like to see how far we can compete state level wise next year.” Following up on what Julie said, the club’s members are very excited and welcoming to anyone who still would like to join. If you would be interested in joining the Mock Trial club, be prepared for public speaking, different scenarios, and being quick with some responses to your opponent.
The Spanish Club is a fun club that has had multiple meetings. These meetings take place in Ms. Bradley’s room 323 every Friday. This club is led by Jose Osorio and Ben Knoops. A variety of games, eating food, and learning Hispanic history occurs in the club every Friday. The information is displayed by a powerpoint with plenty of information on the topic they’re currently learning about, presented by Juniors Jose Osorio and Ben Knoops.
The holiday season is very cheerful and exciting to this club. During the Thanksgiving season they had a potluck with a variety of different foods from Spain and other Spanish speaking places. The games also revolve around the specific holiday that is being celebrated. Osorio started the club, his main reason for doing so was touching. When interviewed he stated, “I wanted to start this club to spread issues about the Hispanic communities, and learn more in depth about the spanish culture than what you can learn in a class.”
Both of these clubs are welcoming new people with open arms and are excited to learn more. Both of these clubs are informative and are equally entertaining. If you’re interested in joining, don’t hesitate to go to those rooms on the designated days.
