In a shocking turn of events, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won the race for Prime Minister against Pierre Pollievre’s Conservatives, marking a new era for Canada and its relationship with the United States.

According to the BBC, “Last year, the Conservatives held a 20-point lead in national polls over the governing Liberals for months… Then a series of shockwaves came in quick succession at the start of 2025, upending the political landscape: Justin Trudeau’s resignation, Carney’s subsequent rise to Liberal leader and prime minister; and the return of Trump to the White House with the threats and tariffs that followed.” This rapid-fire series of events led to Carney and Pollievre racing neck and neck in the polls followed by Carney securing the election at the end of April. Carney has significant financial experience at the World Bank–including guiding the world out of the 2008 financial crisis–and brings a new face to Canadian politics who promises to stand up to Donald Trump’s tariffs and comments about Canada becoming the 51st state. –Boris Nusinzon
