Sitting in Calvert County can get boring for the holidays, as there isn’t much to offer in this southern Maryland county. Some people will go North for the holidays, to get fully immersed into the winter season, while some like summer 365, and head south. Sometimes, people need a little more than what the state offers, so they travel.
Many students and staff also leave the state purely for some family time, to take the break off school to go visit family and friends during the cheering and festive season. One Sophomore, Alex Rubio, stated, “I’m going to New York, to go visit my brother, and I am very excited because I haven’t seen him in a long time.” He is one of the many students here at Northern High School that is travelling to go see loved ones and for an opportunity to get out of town.
Another sophomore, Jeremiah Aston, also stated, “I am going on vacation to North Carolina to visit my uncle, and we always make a lot of food there. We always eat a lot of food there, and it’s always really nice.” These two, along with others, get to catch up with family for the 2024-2025 winter break, and get to be surrounded by loved ones and relatives during the time off for the holidays.
Some students also choose to take the time given out for the school break to go on a nice vacation, to enjoy time in their own fashion. A 9th grader here at Northern High School, Lachlan Brendahl, stated, “I went to my lake house in Oakland, Maryland, otherwise known as deep creek lake. We usually go down to do skiing and snowboarding at the Wisp Ski Resort. I had a lot of fun spending time with my family and skiing. We usually go to celebrate New Year’s Eve and stuff. It’s a yearly tradition that we do every year.”
Nora Williamson, a sophomore in high school, used to attend Northern High School. Now she lives in Massachusetts, but she decided for her holiday break that she would visit the area again. Nora stated, “I went to Maryland, and the reason was because I wanted to visit and hang out with my friends. I had a lot of fun, and it isn’t a tradition but hopefully it will be in the future!”
