Apprenticeship MD is a new program offered by the state, allowing for students to work in a full-time apprenticeship to “earn while you learn.” The program is for rising Seniors only, and there are many positions available–including “HVAC, Fire Alarm Security, Veterinary Technician, Culinary, IT and Maintenance,” according to Ms. McGuffin, the head of the program in Calvert County. The program is designed to be a pathway to graduation, granting students a total of four credits if completed; students go through the typical application and interview process with their possible employer, and if hired they earn at least minimum wage during the program. Apprenticeship MD is excellent for those who are seeking immediate employment after school–Ms. McGuffin noted how “We’ve had 15 students complete the program with 10 of them being offered a position with the company they apprenticed with… completing the Apprenticeship MD Program definitely makes a student more employable. They learn what the expectations are in the workplace from time management to asking questions to taking initiative as they become more confident in their skills.” The apprenticeships are not just for students interested in construction or trade, either–McGuffin is currently aiming to add Business and IT opportunities.
There is also a simpler version of the program available for those who do not want to fully commit. A 50-hour internship provides one elective credit and can typically be done over the summer, providing another great option for those students looking to acquire early employment experience. Applications can be found on the official CTA website, and Ms. McGuffin can be emailed for more information. –Boris Nusinzon
