With a new school year comes new faces. This
year Northern welcomes seven new admin to the
schools community. As the world of education evolves, the new generation of teachers are crucial to our future leaders.
Having new teachers comes with new perspectives, different back-
grounds, and enthusiasm for the school! To get to know our new teachers we want them to reflect
on their experiences, events and people who inspired them to teach. Mr. Brennan is a first year
English teacher, he recalls, “My father was an educator for my whole life, so he really instilled
in me the importance of education. He was a special ed teacher in Prince George’s County
and I got to see all the good work that he did as I was growing up.”
A new science teacher, Mrs. Manley has a diverse background that impacts her decision to become an educator. “My background is aerospace engineering, I went and got my masters in curriculum and instruction with the idea that once my kids got to school age I could come in and start teaching.” Mrs. Manley also mentions that she wanted to share and teach
what she had learned from working as an engineer.
Having a teacher help you achieve goals is not easy,
as every teacher has their own way of doing things.
Teachers use different techniques to get kids
involved in lessons. For example, hands-on learning, lecture based instruction, and group or individual
work. Students all prefer and excel with different techniques.
Mr. Brennan says the easiest way to keep kids actively engaged in class is to, “try and
make them on the same page, establishing that you’re not there as an antagonist force.” A big factor Mr.
Brennan says is making things relevant to students so they can somehow relate and understand different arguments in his class. Mrs. Manley describes the teaching techniques and why she chooses to
utilize them or not. “I’m not really big on just lecture based… I really like
the project based learning.” Just like how Mr. Brennan wants kids to take
what they learn in class and apply it to the after high school experience
Mrs. Manley wants the same. All the new staff and students are looking to have a productive year.
