The stars twinkled above as the stands swelled with Patriot pride, awaiting the excitement of the upcoming game. Many students and parents dressed in their favorite red, white, and blue attire to support the 2023-2024 varsity football team in their fight to bring home the homecoming win. “The energy in the crowd was really strong and I loved being able to dress up with my friends and hang out in the stands while watching the game,” said junior Eleanor Divine.
Before the game, the 2023 homecoming court was announced, honoring seniors Sam Bailey and Samantha Rhodes as king and queen.Throughout the weeks looking forward to the game, students were able to vote for their homecoming court nominees in preparation for their victory walk across the track.
The crowd roared as the first kick off soared through the air. Although the Patriots lost their starting quarterback due to injury in the middle of the season, Junior Alex Moskios stepped up to throw in the homecoming game. Completing numerous passes and running touchdowns, the Northern Patriots took the lead against the Leonardtown Raiders with a final score of 13-7. Winning the homecoming game was a very special moment for many of the Northern players, specifically seniors. “The crowd was very powerful which made it even more special to bring home the win of the season on homecoming. We played very strong and pushed for the win,” said Senior Ryan Moure.
After the game, many fans took pictures with players and family members in the courtyard followed by homecoming proposals. Homecoming is a school-wide spirit event that boosts participation of students, staff, and teachers at NHS. Students look forward to homecoming week every year, including a spirit week preceding the game, followed by a dance the next day hosted by the Student Government Association.
The tackling patriots look forward to their upcoming games of the season in hopes to bring home another win following homecoming. “We continue to watch film to learn about our opponents’ weaknesses and where we need to improve as a team to continue our winning streak,” senior Tyler Brown said. Looking forward to the postseason, fans build anticipation for the future games on the newly renovated NHS field.
