The new school year has officially started at Northern High School! However, compared to last year, there have been many changes. There is a new phone policy, schedule changes, and new dress code policies in place. Lunches have been overflowing with kids, with many having to either sit outside or squeeze into a seat with their buddies. In addition, there are many other issues that come from the new schedules and how the lunches are split up.

To begin, the new lunch periods, labeled as 4A, 5B, 6C, and 7D have been confusing for many students. Towards the end of the summer, administrators began sending out schedules, reminders, and information on the new schedule changes. Even though Dr. Simmons made a YouTube video explaining the new schedule, the alterations still left many students concerned. One of the numerous problems of this is that incoming freshmen were given another thing to be anxious about when starting high school.

Savannah Bly, a Junior in lunch 4A, said that “there are too many people, sometimes the lunch tables are overcrowded and there’s a lot of people you may not want to see.” Others complained about the timing, and the wait to get lunch. “The people who have to get up and get lunch barely get any time because they spend all their time in the lunch line,” said Jose Osorio-Valladares, a junior in lunch 4A. Students are facing issues with their time in the cafeteria being cut short, lunch lines being too long, and constantly bumping into people when getting up.

Juniors and Seniors have noticed the jam-packed lunches the most, whereas Freshman and Sophmores may have not even realized. “If you get up to get lunch from the line, people might come and take your seat,” said Katayla Stover, a Junior in lunch 4A. 4A seems to be the biggest lunch during the school day; there are always people walking around the cafeteria, making it extremely difficult to get a seat quickly or to go get lunch and come sit back down.

Students are wondering if the schedule will be changed back to normal next year. With even more freshmen coming into school next year, it brings up the question of whether the whole school will be packed just as tightly as the lunches next year or not.
