The National Honors Society, Benjamin Banneker chapter, welcomed thirty-eight new members on November 28th, 2023. NHS is an organization that focuses on four pillars, service, character, scholarship, and leadership. Members must participate in and lead service projects around the school or community. To apply, the student must have had a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher, ensuring high academic standards from all participants. For five years, Mr. Halstead and Mrs. Ekelund have run the organization, however, it’s the members who keep the program on track. Senior Nathan Mehls resides as president, senior Mia Halbert as vice president, senior Evelynn Argeles as secretary, senior Mairead Fitzgerald as historian, and senior Charlotte Thon as treasurer. The National Honors Society runs free SAT tutoring for underclassmen, charity drives, and peer tutoring, to name a few activities that bolster leadership and academia around the school. –Kat Brabson
